The Wild's Domain (Part 5)

“Where to begin, I suppose what it is you need to know.” Colton stated, standing in front of the star voyagers with Tyson at his side.
“Start by explaining what happened seven years ago, we could all use some information about that.” Evelynn asked.
The man nodded, “All right, seven years ago, the earth as we know it was completely changed. Close to terraforming but not that far. Seven years ago on a normal day with nothing exciting occurring, the planet underwent an excruciating reset. When I mean reset is, everything was cleared. All man made structures wiped from our planet as well as most of the population. Those who survived woke up in the wilderness with a bag of equipment, survival gear and utter confusion. You didn’t receive any more communications because there was no one or no way to do it.”
“How can a planet reset itself, that’s impossible!” Argued Zayne.
“We don’t know, stiff figuring it out

“Fine, but still what was even going on when this ‘Reset’ was happening?”
Colton remained quiet once more, he rubbed the back of his head and looked at Tyson whose eyes were also filled with curiosity. Colton contemplated lying, but then realized that the truth could come from his own scientists so he reluctantly began.
“I’m going to assume that, despite your extend period of time up in the stars, you all know what an atomic bomb is. We don’t know if it was worldwide but what happened was that, in the distance we saw what looked like a green explosion, its blast wave continuing to grow rapidly. It engulfed everything in view, and the aftermath is this world.”
Wes laughed, “Forgive me commander, but you can’t be serious. A nuclear blast, no, we would have seen our planet burn.”
“It was like one, not one itself.”
“Still we would have seen it, you’re lying to-“
“No, I don’t think you understand the words coming out of my mouth. I was outside when this happened, I saw my world become engulfed I myself was taken in by this wave. I am sorry that you couldn’t see when the world was a blurred mess which I’m surprised the sun was able to pass through. I am sorry you’re having trouble grasping such an idea but its not impossible because if you want impossible just look out the window! I wouldn’t lie about this because we need you just as much as you need us. Now if you’re going to deny the one who saw what was happening then why do I waste my breath?”
Wes looked at the man before him, and then looked down with shame.

“Right then, so earth resets itself leaving only some of us alive. Then of course as Reid saw, it’s more hostile. There are a handful of monsters in this world but the main threats for us are Stalkers, Ravengers and a Drakin for the moment. I will let your people explain what I’m saying later but for now let me continue.”
“Commander, you said you had an idea why our station shut down, right?” Asked Rocco.
“Yes, I do. Let me get an idea of who's who, Evelyn’s the captain. Rocco is the systems manager or IT guy, Reid I’m guessing scientist as well as Zayne, however each of you focusing in on different fields. The men who died being pilot and engineer, if you had a proper pilot you wouldn’t have crashed and possibly had the sense to land near civilization. Then we have the little security team, Ashley coordinating from the bridge with Wes being the striker, I mean if the Captain want’s a second opinion then security is the smartest option.”
“Why do our positions matter?”
“Just for figuring out what went wrong. Tell me now, who was in charge of system updates and if needed clean ups?”
“That was… that was the ground crew, they handled system updates and things of the sort. Other than that I handled computer work.”
“So you didn’t have access to those systems.”
“No, I didn’t.”
“Well that’s just a set up for failure, what happened is quite simple. You probably received an update on your system hardware prior to the reset. More information about history, recipes, other interesting things, regardless they were updated. Now let’s say this update had a lifespan of seven years until it was expecting a newer version of the software but it didn’t get one. What might happen then?”
“I see where this is going but how does history notes and other things of the such affect the entire well being of a station.”
“Because the your technicians on earth couldn’t build your computer software well enough for it to handle on its own. If anything the only reason you received any of the updates was to make sure you survived. Then the updates stopped and the system began to corrode to nothing and you were forced to flee.”
“How many theories do you have in general?” Asked Rocco annoyed.
“He does have a point, I mean a few days before the updates, I noticed that the system was a lot slower than usual.” Zayne stated.
“Well, this would all be so laughable if we didn’t end up falling out the sky now wouldn’t it?” Asked Reid in a humorous matter.
Evelynn shook her head at the boy, “You’re humor is lacking, now I think we’ve had enough history for tonight. So I think it would be beneficial if you go see if you can help any of the Commanders men with securing us for the night. I just need a personal moment with him.”
The group nodded and got up beginning to leave, “Tyson, go with them. Make sure we still have enough units to protect the perimeter.”
“Yes sir.”
Tyson bolted out of the room leaving the two chiefs staring at each other.

“Who’d you lose Colton?”
He shook his head, “No, you do not have the right to ask me that!”
“My ship, answer me.”
“My soldiers, no questions about who I have and haven’t lost.”
“Why not, a man who’s hiding something always keeps secrets Commander.”
“Or he’s protecting people. Let me get one thing clear, me prior to the reset and me now are two different people. I would rather go on never speaking about that me but so we can figure out why this is happening I give him the chance to inform, that doesn’t mean he’s yours to question. Keep in mind whose home this is astronaut.”
The Captain nodded, “Fine… have you had dinner yet?”
“What?”
“Dinner, have you eaten anything tonight.”
“I’ve been busy, and my answer is no I’m good for tonight. You can eat if you need to as can your crew but I have a job to do. Now have a good night Captain.”
She nodded, but Colton didn’t catch it as he was too busy rushing out of the room, needing to cool off. These people really enjoyed pushing his buttons, despite this, the more people, especially with these resources like this, the better. Regardless, Colton knew this would be a rough night.
